​Taitung has been inhabited by the Amis Aboriginal Tribe which has lived there since at least1500 BC, and over 35% of the people that live there are Taiwan Aborigines. The area is still a center for Amis rituals and traditional ceremonies, as well as aboriginal culture. The east rift valley was also settled by aboriginal tribes such as the Puyuma which relocated from Pingtung. It’s the perfect setting to have a feast with friends, enjoy a drink, or simply lay back and read a good book.

The East Coast National Scenic Area, known as “Taiwan’s last unspoiled land”, stretches  170 kilometers down the east coast of the island. Trekking for 18kms along the Tsagaan River through stunning valley we reach the Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, sacred to local people and boasts many herds of wild goats . A great way to see this quaint little village tucked away in the northeast coast of Taiwan.

Taitung’s annual Hot Air Balloon Festival is an international event that offers a thrilling hot  air balloon ride, Night Glow Show, Balloon Tethering, and Balloon Parade. The region is also rich in cultural experiences, with opportunities to learn about indigenous culture at Beinan Cultural Park and contemporary art at Taitung Art Museum. Afterwards, go for a walk along Coastal Highway 11 on the beach and then visit Hualien’s night market for dinner.
The coastal highway heading North to Hualien is quite popular and has many places for camping and homestays. For a more strenuous ride, Highway 197 heading North to Luye and Guangshan is a rewarding ride. South of Taitung the strip of land between mountains and the ocean evaporates and the ride winding along the base of the hill is spectacularly picturesque. Jen Dong Shan ice house is a dessert shop with a long history.
